Finally, Already, End of the Year 2020

I wanted to update my blog one last time before welcoming a new year, and properly say good bye to the year 2020. This year has literally flown away with so many unexpected continuous challenges and an uncertain future. Just like everyone else, our industry had to adjust to this historical unique phenomenon. Undoubtedly, our dwelling has become a priority for many of us given it now plays more functions than ever – the first and last place to relax, work, gather with our loved ones in addition to sleep and eat. Over this year, we saw the declining trend in utilizing restaurants and hotels, whilst an increasing number of opportunities involving “ghost kitchens” and short term rental spaces primarily for staycations.

Oddly, it was an invigorating experience to be involved in designs meant “to improve” existing dwelling environments and simultaneously a relief that people saw value in our expertise. Unfortunately, when the economy weakens, we generally face a fewer number of opportunities. This year was a surprise. People reached out to us since many people wanted to seek better ways to utilize what they already have instead of making new investments for a bigger house, renting an office space, etc. Perhaps this will be the new norm but time will tell how quickly things return to “normal”.

I know we’re still going through tough times and that we have not found perfect solutions to combat the virus. However, I want to stay optimistic. In the past few weeks, we happened to talk with a few groups who are looking for a space to work with their co-workers instead of sharing an office space with other companies. Although the technology permits us to work remotely and save traditional fixed costs including office rents and expenses, there are things that humans innately appreciate and eventually become unhappy when they cannot have over a period of time – connections with nature and people who you love or have common interests with. I feel proud of having paid attention to this concept ever since I started getting involved with the design industry and feel fortunate to be able to share the thoughts and knowledge with our clients.

Panton’s color announcement confirms our mindset for the year 2021 – colors to overcome the continuity of uncertainty. Let’s stay hopeful to get through this together.
